The Pre-Kindergarten classroom is a blend of play and learning as children demonstrate curiosity about new encounters and the world around them. A strong emphasis has been placed on creating a learning environment where words and print are valued. The classroom is designed to strengthen essential language skills such as listening, speaking, reading, writing, and mathematics. The class comes together for Morning Meeting to engage in activities that incorporate letters, numbers, days of the week and months of the year. Concepts that are related to the classroom’s project are integrated daily and offer opportunities for reading, writing and mathematics. Foreign language instruction is tied into the calendar and project topic. In depth research and exploration takes place on a particular topic that both the teachers and the children have chosen. Children participate in hands-on experiences through a variety of interest areas that include art, science, mathematics, writing, dramatic play, family life, music & listening, blocks, and sensory tables. Special features of the Pre-Kindergarten program include field trips, Grandfriend’s Day, library, show & tell, homework bag, and extra-curricular activities. Pre-Kindergarten children gain further appreciation for the fine arts by attending weekly art and music lessons. The Pre-Kindergarten program strives to promote a strong foundation of positive self-esteem, language acquisition, cooperation, and independent exploration.
