Knowledge stems from the roots of exploration. The Village Lower School is an extension of the Sweet Peas Village program. We understand that each and every student comes to us with their own unique ways of learning. Our goal is to nurture these talents by providing students with an academic and social experience that stimulates and cultivates their wondrous young minds. The curriculum combines a hands-on approach with a creative teaching method, while at the same time preserving the individuality of every student.
Eligibility & Enrollment
If your child has completed a pre-kindergarten program but did not meet the cutoff date for kindergarten, our program is the right choice for you. Our program serves children who will be turning 5 by December 1. Our class will also include children who are eligible for kindergarten but are looking for a private school setting.
Curriculum
Language Arts: To help children grow into successful readers and writers we incorporate guided, shared, and independent reading and writing sessions. Specific components of our language arts program include Fundations, Fountas & Pinnell Literacy, and Handwriting Without Tears.
Mathematics: We implement My Math, a program fully aligned to the Common Core State Standards. Mathematical concepts that are explored include number sense, estimation, measurement, geometry, and patterning.
Science: Student learning flourishes in a hands-on environment where children learn why phenomenon occur, test hypotheses & prove theories, collect & analyze data, make predictions, and draw conclusions.
Social Studies: Designed to create awareness of environmental & social issues. Through virtual journeys and exploration, students make connections among themselves, community, traditions and the environment.
Philanthropy: Through our Philanthropy Program, our students discover that the virtues of empathy, tolerance, and kindess lie within them & learn that even the smallest gestures can be of great value to the human spirit. Most recently our class has partnered with St. Elizabeth’s Home located in East Greenwich, and participates in monthly visits with the residents.
Gardening: Our Garden Program offers children a wide range of benefits that promote their physical & psychological development. Benefits include physical health & activity, a connection to nature, improved fine motor skills, and nurturing resposibility.
Spanish, Music, Art, Physical Education, Health, and Library are also incorporated as an integral part of each week.
